Body, Mind and Spirit – are they one?
A Lecture and Workshop with John Wilks

It was the goal of some of the original anatomists of the 18th century and many of the developers of manual therapies to discover precisely where the soul resides in the body.  This quest led to a truly holistic approach to healing which is often lost with a more mechanistic view of the body.

Many manual therapies (such as Osteopathy, Craniosacral Therapy, Rolfing, Bowen etc) had their origins in the strong spiritual beliefs and experiences of their founders which shaped the form and direction of their hands-on work.  Some of these spiritual origins can be traced to specific spiritual teachers, but also to spiritual traditions and lineages. Practitioners such as A.T. Still, William Sutherland, Rollin Becker and Ida Rolf, all had strong spiritual and even mystical experiences which infused the way they worked and developed their therapies.  These influences were broad and included Christianity (particularly the Old Testament), Kashmir Shaivism, Mediumship, Yoga, Subud, the writings of Swedenborg and even the ancient Egyptians.

The basic principles of hands-on work are universal and can be experienced directly in terms of how intention and holding a safe space can instigate deep healing and invite a sense of wholeness where body, mind and spirit exist in total harmony.

In this short lecture and workshop, John Wilks will lead us in a somatic exploration of our own bodies, to discover these universal and ancient principles behind hands-on healing. He will also explore how the journey of spirit coming into form through the process of incarnation (conception, pregnancy and birth) impacts us on so many levels and how that process colours how we relate to the world, each other and our own bodies.
