The Power of Truth, Wisdom, Choice | Part II

Announcing The Power of Truth, Wisdom, Choice Part 2

Dear Friend of The Sophia Institute,

Today, we are enthusiastically announcing Part 2 of The Power of Truth, Wisdom, Choice 3-part series with our guides Andrew Harvey, Caroline Myss, and Matthew Fox. Many of you joined us for Part 1 this past Spring with Kelly Deutsch, Mirabai Starr, and Matthew Fox. We received so many positive responses from that event, along with requests for more on the mystics.

Given all that these times have brought us in challenges and also transformative opportunities, The Sophia Institute has chosen to focus on Truth, Wisdom, Choice through the lens of the mystics. This series, along with the mystics we will meet, is designed to help awaken and sustain our awareness for the greater good in our lives and our world.

We are pleased and honored to have Andrew Harvey, Caroline Myss, and Matthew Fox as our guides for this journey as we focus on Truth, Wisdom, Choice.  Wednesday, September 21, 28, and October 5 at  6:00-7:30 pm EST.

A recording of this event will be provided to all those who have registered for this event. The recording is exclusively for registrants only.

Hadewijch of Antwerp and Love’s Message in our Crisis

In his latest book, Love is Everything: A Year with Hadewijch of Antwerp, Andrew Harvey presents the grand exalted and grounded wisdom of one of humanity’s universal women mystics; the great Beguine of the 13th century Hadewijch of Antwerp. Hadewijch knew in her heart, mind, soul and body the transfiguring power of divine love and chose to live its wisdom and truth despite intense resistance both from within her own community and from the church establishment. Silenced for seven centuries, her clear ecstatic voice is returning to us now at the time we need to hear it most to encourage us to Live Love both in our inner practice and in our outer action with nobility, passion and compassion. Hadewijch knew that Love’s deepest purpose is to birth the divine in our humanity and Andrew Harvey believes that our current global dark night is the potential ordained birthing ground of a new embodied divine humanity that will be able to concrete with the divine a holy new way of being and doing everything and a new world. In his presentation he will select seven of Hadewijch’s greatest poems in an order that reveals the depth, majesty and reach of Hadewijch’s lived vision and will relate her extraordinary discoveries of Love’s power to how we all now need to be and act in our world crisis.

The Greatest Choice in Life

The journey of life is described in many ways, but all descriptions have one thing in common: an emphasis on the power and significance of our power of choice. There is no such thing as an insignificant choice. And there is no such thing as a private or personal choice, as everything we decide even in our interior self is manifest somehow in our daily life. In truth, life is only about the world we create from our choices and experiencing the consequences of those choices, individually as well as collectively. We are not accustomed to thinking in terms of our personal choices blending with those of humanity – but we should, as every choice we make influences the whole in some way. It does not matter that we cannot see this mystical calculation. We cannot see “love”, either, and yet we thrive on that invisible force. Regardless of all the many choices we make in life, however, they all are symbolic of the greatest choice of all: The love of power versus the power of love. Every choice in life is essentially a disguise for that one soul choice: Can we choose to share love in any situation, or in any type of conversation, or in any type of relationship, or while waiting in line for something? Or will we choose the illusion of entitlement and power? For example, even the choice to be kind instead of impatient can change another person’s world. It seems such a small choice, but not if you are a person starving for kindness, right? Every situation in life – including all of our personal thoughts – are set ups for that essential mystical question. I will explore this very rich and delicious subject in depth in our time together.

Truth, Wisdom and Choice: Thomas Aquinas, Meister Eckhart and Mary Oliver

To continue our search into Truth, Wisdom and Choice, we will again call on mystics for their contributions to enlightening us.  In this seminar we will consider the teachings about Truth, Wisdom and Choice from Thomas Aquinas and Meister Eckhart of the 13th/14th centuries and Mary Oliver of the 20th and 21st century. Each in their own way celebrate all three categories, Aquinas says, among other things, “the proper objects of the heart are truth and justice.”  Notice how truth and justice go together, in other words, lies do not lead to justice, only truth does. In addition he is proposing that we look to our hearts, not just our heads, for truth.  Eckhart reminds us that “compassion means justice,” so if truth runs with justice, so does it run with compassion.  He also reminds us that “truth does not come from outside in but comes from inside out and passes through an inner form.”  Thus truth has a lot to do with art and creativity. And Mary Oliver has her memorable way of talking about seeing truth by “paying attention” and by committing to “admiration,” a way of truth and wisdom and making choices, choices that affirm that “life is a blessing.” where “appreciation slowly swells to astonishment.” Much to explore with these three big hearts and hearty souls around the rich themes of Truth, Wisdom and Choice.
