“Motown was about music for all people – white and black, blue and green, cops and the robbers. I was reluctant to have our music alienate anyone.” – Berry Gordy

We are excited to have Charlton Singleton, as honorary chair, opening the Motown Celebration and speaking to the impact Motown has had on American culture and our beloved Charleston. Motown’s roots run deep in Charleston, influencing musicians of all genres, artists, and performers. Its ability to build bridges between race, culture, income, and art forms enable us all to unite as one community.

Within its music, there was a wisdom about ourselves and the world we live in. Motown not only brought us sunshine on cloudy days, it brought us connection in a time of divide, it brought us strength from the persecuted, it brought us joy amidst pain, and it brought us abundant love that overcame hatred. The sounds of Motown strengthened our connections with one another and touched our lives personally, leaving us a bit different than the way that it found us.

When we learned that this year is the 60th Anniversary of Motown, we were inspired to celebrate the soulful impact of African American musicians on American music and culture. Motown permeated a divide within American culture, unifying black and white, young and old, pop and soul.

“Celebrating 60 Years of Motown” is a continuation of our work for social justice and racial equity and is a benefit event for The Sophia Institute and Social Justice Racial Equity Collaborative. We invite you join us at Forte’s Jazz Lounge to celebrate the soulful music of Motown and honor Motown’s influence on our culture.
